Correct use of strip mill rolls

strip mill rolls are key components in the production process of strip materials. The following are details about the use of strip rollers:

backup rolls

Preparation before installation

Check the roller

  • First, the appearance of the strip roller should be inspected to see if there are any defects such as bumps, scratches, and sand holes on the roller surface. For example, if there are deep scratches on the roller surface, it may leave marks on the strip during the rolling process, affecting the product quality.
  • Check the dimensional accuracy and surface roughness of the roll neck to ensure that it meets the installation requirements of the equipment. Because the roll neck is a key part that cooperates with bearings and other components, insufficient accuracy may cause installation difficulties or vibration during operation.

Check parameters

  • Confirm whether the dimensions of the strip rollers (such as roller diameter, roller length, etc.) match the design specifications of the rolling mill. For example, in hot-rolled strip production, if the roller diameter does not meet the requirements, it may lead to unreasonable rolling force distribution and affect the thickness accuracy of the strip.
  • Check the material and hardness of the roller body and other parameters. Different rolling processes and product requirements require appropriate roller material and hardness. For example, for cold-rolled thin plate production, working rollers with higher hardness are usually required to ensure the flatness and surface quality of the strip.

Installation Process

Cleaning work

Before installing the strip roll, the installation position of the rolling mill and the roll body itself must be thoroughly cleaned. Remove impurities such as oil stains, iron filings, etc. on the rolling mill mounting seat, and also wipe the surface of the roll body to prevent foreign matter from entering the bearing or the matching part between the roll body and the rolling mill.

Install bearings and seals

  • According to the equipment installation manual, correctly install the bearing. Generally, the bearing is heated to the appropriate temperature (using the hot-installation method), and then put on the roll neck to ensure that the bearing and the roll neck fit tightly. For example, in some high-precision rolling mills, the installation accuracy of the bearing is required to be at the micron level to ensure the stable operation of the strip roll
  • Install seals. The function of seals is to prevent lubricant leakage and external impurities from entering the bearing. Correct installation of seals can extend the service life of the bearing, such as using appropriate sealants and installation sequence to ensure the sealing effect.

Install in place

  • Use appropriate lifting equipment to install the strip roll to the designated position of the rolling mill. During the installation process, pay attention to keeping the roll body horizontal and vertical. For example, you can use tools such as a level to check to ensure installation accuracy. And tighten the connecting bolts according to the specified torque to prevent the bolts from loosening during operation.

Precautions during use

lubricating

  • Reasonable lubrication is the key to ensure the normal operation of the strip roller. Choose the appropriate lubricant according to the roller speed, load and other factors. For example, in high-speed strip rollers, high-quality synthetic lubricants may be required.
  • Establish a regular lubrication system and lubricate according to the specified time intervals and lubrication amounts. For example, in the continuous rolling production process, the bearings and other parts must be lubricated at a certain rolling length or time to reduce friction and wear.

Rolling parameter adjustment

  • According to the material, thickness and width of the strip, the rolling force, rolling speed and other parameters should be adjusted reasonably. For example, when rolling thicker steel plates, a larger rolling force is required, but care should be taken to avoid exceeding the bearing capacity of the strip rollers, otherwise the roller body may be deformed
  • Control the tension of the strip well. The appropriate tension can ensure the stable operation of the strip between the rollers and prevent the strip from running off. For example, when cold rolling aluminum strip, by adjusting the tension of the front and rear tension rollers, the aluminum strip can maintain good flatness between the working rollers.

Operation status monitoring

  • Use sensors and other equipment to monitor the running status of the strip roller in real time. The main monitoring parameters include vibration, temperature and speed. For example, when the bearing temperature is too high, it may be caused by poor lubrication or bearing wear, and it is necessary to stop the machine for inspection in time.
  • Observe the surface quality and dimensional accuracy of the strip. If the strip is wavy or has uneven thickness, it may be caused by the wear of the strip roller or the decrease in installation accuracy. The strip roller should be adjusted or replaced in time.

Maintenance and care

Regular inspection

  • Regularly conduct a comprehensive inspection of the strip rollers, including the wear of the roller surface, the wear and clearance of the bearings, the sealing effect of the seals, etc. For example, for the working rollers, the wear of the surface should be checked every certain rolling batch, and when the wear reaches a certain degree, it should be repaired or replaced.
  • Check the tightness of the connecting parts, such as whether the bolts are loose. Loose bolts may cause the strip rollers to move during operation, affecting the rolling quality.

Repair and Replacement

  • When the strip roller surface is slightly worn, it can be repaired by turning, grinding and other methods to restore the dimensional accuracy and surface quality of the roller body. For example, for some cold rolling rollers with local wear, the surface roughness can be made to reach the standard of new rollers through precision grinding.
  • When the strip roller is seriously worn, deformed, etc. and cannot meet the production requirements through repair, it is necessary to replace it with a new strip roller in time. At the same time, the replaced old rollers should be properly stored or reasonably scrapped.
