Maintenance of strip rollers

The maintenance of the strip roller during use is the key to ensure its performance and service life. The following are the details:

Daily inspection

Appearance inspection

  • Carefully inspect the surface of the strip roller before and after each use. Check for obvious signs of wear, scratches, pits or corrosion. For example, after rolling a metal strip containing corrosive components, pay special attention to check whether the roller surface is corroded. If small scratches are found, they can be repaired with appropriate grinding tools to avoid affecting the surface quality of the strip.
  • Check for oil leakage around the bearing seats and seals at both ends of the roller. If there is oil leakage, it may cause insufficient lubrication or pollute the working environment, and it needs to be dealt with in time, such as replacing the seal.

Run parameter check

  • Monitor the temperature of the strip roller during operation. Real-time temperature data can be obtained through temperature sensors installed on the bearing seat or the surface of the roller. Under normal circumstances, the temperature should be kept within a reasonable range (the specific range varies depending on the equipment and working conditions). If the temperature is too high, it may be caused by poor lubrication, bearing damage or excessive load, and it is necessary to stop the machine immediately for inspection.
  • Pay attention to the vibration of the strip roller. Use vibration sensors to detect vibration amplitude and frequency. Abnormal vibration may mean problems such as roller imbalance, bearing wear or loose installation. For example, when the vibration amplitude exceeds the specified value, it is necessary to balance the equipment or check the tightness of the connecting parts.

Clean regularly

Surface cleaning

  • Clean the surface of the strip roller regularly to remove dust, oil, metal chips and other impurities attached to it. You can use a clean rag or a special cleaning tool to wipe it. During the cleaning process, be careful to avoid scratching the surface of the roller. For some oil stains that are difficult to remove, you can use an appropriate organic solvent to clean it, but make sure that the solvent does not corrode the roller material.
  • Clean the bearing seat and the area around the seal to prevent dust and impurities from entering the bearing. Keeping the seal clean can extend its service life and ensure a good sealing effect.

Internal cleaning (when appropriate)

  • According to the use of the equipment, the internal structure of the strip roller (such as the inside of the bearing) should be cleaned in time. When cleaning the inside of the bearing, the bearing needs to be disassembled first and cleaned with special cleaning equipment and cleaning agents. After cleaning, make sure the bearing is completely dry and re-lubricate before installation.

Lubrication management

Grease/Oil Selection

  • Choose the appropriate grease or lubricant according to the working environment, speed, load and other factors of the strip roller. For example, for strip rollers working in high temperature environments, it is necessary to choose grease with good high temperature resistance; for strip rollers rotating at high speed, low viscosity and high purity lubricants should be used to reduce friction and wear.
  • Consider the compatibility of grease/oil with the strip roller material to avoid chemical reactions that could cause damage to the roller or bearing.

Lubrication cycle and quantity control

  • Establish a reasonable lubrication cycle. The length of the lubrication cycle depends on factors such as the working intensity and working environment of the strip roller. Generally speaking, the lubrication cycle should be shortened appropriately when the working intensity is high and the environment is harsh. For example, in a workshop with continuous rolling production, the strip roller may need to be lubricated every day or every few days.
  • Strictly control the amount of grease/oil used. Too little lubrication will increase friction and wear of parts; too much lubrication may cause leakage, waste lubricant and pollute the working environment. You can refer to the equipment manufacturer’s recommendations or conduct experiments to determine the optimal amount of lubrication.

Wear repair and replacement

Wear repair

  • When the surface of the strip roller is slightly worn, it can be repaired by mechanical processing methods such as grinding and turning. Grinding can effectively remove minor flaws on the roller surface and restore the surface flatness. Turning is suitable for repairing slightly larger wear. Turning can remove the wear layer on the roller surface, and then grinding can be performed to make the roller reach the required dimensional accuracy and surface roughness.
  • For some special belt rollers, such as rollers with coating on the surface, it may be necessary to re-coat them after repairing the wear to restore their original performance. The type and process of coating should be selected according to the specific use of the belt roller. For example, Teflon coating can be used on some belt rollers that require anti-sticking properties.

Replacement judgment and operation

  • When the wear of the strip roller exceeds the repairable range, or when there is severe deformation, cracks and other damage, it needs to be replaced in time. To determine whether the strip roller needs to be replaced, you can refer to the wear limit standard provided by the equipment manufacturer, or decide based on the quality of the strip during the actual production process. For example, if the quality indicators such as the thickness accuracy and surface flatness of the strip continue to decline, and there is still no improvement after adjustment and repair of the strip roller, it may be necessary to replace the strip roller.
  • When replacing the strip roller, strictly follow the operation manual of the equipment. Pay attention to the installation accuracy of the new roller, including the horizontality, verticality of the roller body, and the matching accuracy with other parts. After the installation is completed, necessary debugging and inspection should be carried out to ensure that the new roller can work normally.
